Recently, I was asked by the national publication Massage Magazine to write a spotlight on reflexology for massage students. In it, I explain the difference between massage and reflexology, why the public seeks out reflexology, levels of training, employment opportunities and continuing education options. As I was writing the article, I thought the information might also be useful for existing therapists trying to figure out in what direction to focus your practice; how you can stand out in the crowd. What do you think?
Nice article Karen. As I begin my practice I am starting to experience the lack of understanding that exists about the difference between massage and reflexology. It seems I usually end up in that conversation, explaining the differences to clients, or potential clients. However, I am also discovering that there are more than a few people who are actually familiar with the benefits of reflexology and it’s relationship to internal body systems. I believe as ongoing research continues to reap greater insight about the human body, and physiology in particular, it will help distinguish reflexology as a unique form of bodywork, complimentary to but distinct from massage.
I am also finding that many people are seeking a more holistic approach to health and often that includes a look at non-invasive approaches like reflexology. Although reflexology has been around for thousands of years, to many people, it is a new approach to health worth exploring. As a practitioner I feel it is part of my obligation to continue to inform the public about this fascinating modality.
Although here in Florida I must also be a certified massage therapist to practice reflexology, I believe I can differentiate myself by informing the general public through outreach programs, like the one I organized at the University of North Florida last year. I can also use social media, advertising literature, and writing articles in health related publications, just as you have done, to help people understand the special attributes associated with this wonderful approach to health.
